World Refugee Day Call to Action

Today on World Refugee Day, we recognize the difficult journey of refugees and their contribution to our society and economy. We all can do our part to ease the journey and support their integration into a new country. VN Center supports migrant, asylum seeker, and refugee communities. Join our efforts in a volunteer or internship program in Costa Rica.

Today, on World Refugee Day, we are reflecting upon resilience, courage, and humanity of millions who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or violence. We must recognize the dangers of their journeys, celebrate their strength, and advocate for humane policies.

Understanding the Journey: The journey of a refugee is marked by unimaginable challenges and hardships. It begins with desperation to protect yourself and your family from danger, which means leaving behind everything familiar – homes, communities, and often loved ones – in search of safety and hope. The journey is difficult and dangerous. We often share testimonies of migrants in transit and the dangers faced in the Darien Gap. They are met with uncertaintiy and difficulties in each step of their journey – from persecution in their homecountry, to dangers in transit, to navigating complex bureaucratic systems. Yet, amidst these trials, refugees demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination.

If you were forced to leave your home, where would you go and what would you take with you?

Resilience: On World Refugee Day we must recognize and learn from the resilience of refugees. Refugees embody strength and courage. They rebuild their lives from zero, often in unfamiliar lands, learning new languages, adapting to new cultures, and sometimes in the shadow of rejection and discrimination. Their knowledge and skills give them the ability to contribute positively to their new communities.

Integration and Empathy: In a world divided by political rhetoric, World Refugee Day serves as a reminder of our shared humanity. It calls upon us to work for integrated societies, empathy, and understanding. It prompts us to challenge stereotypes and divisive narratives and to recognize that diversity enriches us all. By building integrated communities, we provide environments for migrants and refugees to contribute to societies and economies.

Global Responsibility: Addressing the challenges faced by refugees requires global cooperation and action. It calls upon governments, companies, organizations, and individuals to uphold human rights, provide humanitarian assistance, and support resettlement and integration. Advocacy efforts play a crucial role in shaping policies that prioritize protection, dignity, and opportunities for refugees worldwide.

A Call for Action: On World Refugee Day, we encourage you to take action in your community. Volunteer with local refugee organizations, advocate for policy changes, and learn about the reality of migrants and refugees. Solidarity and kindness can go along way to support migrant and refugees.

Volunteer or Intern As we observe World Refugee Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees around the world. We recognize their strength and their resilience and work towards a future where every individual can live with dignity. Together, we can build a world where compassion knows no borders and where every person, regardless of their background, can find refuge and opportunity.

Let us embrace our shared humanity and create a world where no one is left behind.
